Schooling in Ethiopia is very young. The first formal school in the present sense was established in 1908 during the reign of Emperor Minilik II. Higher education is a much recent phenomenon with the first college established in 1950, which is less than seventy years old. Currently there are 36 universities in Ethiopia, most of which are less than ten years old and a few others, except Addis Ababa University, are less than 33 years old.
This left a huge burden of responsibility on AAU to be a symbol of higher education development in Ethiopia by way of cultivating, nurturing and qualifying all the new universities so that they serve the nation and at the same time become competent academic institutions in this globalized world. This paper therefore attempts to bring out the arduous struggle AAU did and is doing, on one hand, to bring up those young universities in the country to the level it reached and, on the other, to level itself with internationally acclaimed universities in the global completion to become a prominent research university.
