BIGSAS Forum for

young scholars of

African Literature

as part of the

31st Swahili Colloquium

Sat, 12 May 2018, 4-6 pm

On Saturday, 12th May from 4.15 to 6.00 p.m., we will host the BIGSAS exchange forum for scholars of African literatures. The objective is to open a discussion, where  Junior Fellows from BIGSAS, alumni and doctoral students from Bayreuth and other universities together with invited authors, poets and literary scholars, like Kithaka wa Mberia (Nairobi), Lydia Kasese (Dar es Salaam) and Uta Reuster-Jahn (Hamburg) can reflect upon the role of their own research, their position as researchers and to reflect upon visions for their discipline(s) and fields in the future. We would like to discuss experiences with curriculums and research as well as reflect upon a future vision for African languages and literatures. Particularly with Junior Fellows working on different languages and literary traditions, we want to reflect upon the scholars’ positions in their own context and differences between traditions of literary scholarship and linguistics. Our aim for the forum is not to simply evaluate the past but rather to develop innovative perspectives for future research and teaching. Some questions to be discussed include but are not limited to: how literary studies related to Africa should look like in the future, what role literary studies should play in and with regard to African studies and what it means for African studies to be predominantly shaped by the social sciences (taking into consideration their prominence in research related to the region).
