Informationen zur Person: Prof. Dr. Lwanga Bukenya has been invited for 2 months (from 1-5-09 to 30-6-09) by Prof. Dr. Said A.M. Khamis as a guest of the Institute of African Studies. Prof. Bukenya is one of the leading literary scholars in East Africa who has immensely worked on issues and topics of English literature, African literatures in English and African language African literatures.

Apart from being a world known oral literature specialist, he is a highly reputed educator who has, in different capacities, taught at Makerere University, Kenyatta University, University of Nairobi, University of Dar-es-salaam and University of Stirling.

Prof. Bukenya is also a notable poet, playwright, novelist and short story writer. Moreover, he is a well known literary critic who has written on specific issues of oral literature, oral literature theory, oracy and female empowerment in Africa, pragmatic and the teaching of literature, East African poetry etc. He has also produced series of English language course books for secondary schools in East Africa.

In his stay here in Bayreuth, he will be teaching (in collaboration with Prof. Gabriele Sommer, Dr. Tobias Wendl and Prof. Said Khamis), a fieldwork course for AspLiKu. Here will also present a paper during the annual Swahili colloquium organised by Afrikanistik I and II, scheduled to take place from 22-5-09 to 24-5-09 at IWALEWA Haus. Prof. Bukenya has been engaged in doing research on proverbs from a semiotic point of view. He will present some of his findings in Afrikanistik’s research colloquium: Tuesday, 26-5-09, 16 ct in GW I S 125.
