|Informationen zur Person:||Christoffel R. Botha is Professor of African Languages and Director of the School of Humanities at the University of Fort Hare in South Africa. He was invited by Dymitr Ibriszimow, Dean of BIGSAS, to be a guest lecturer from 9th May until 22nd July 2011.
Prof. Botha is one of the most renowned specialists in the field of Xhosa Language and Xhosa Literature. He grew up in Eastern Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa, where he was exposed to the Xhosa Language from an early age. This childhood experience determined his future academic interest. While Botha has taught Xhosa at various South African universities, e.g. Stellenbosch University, University of the Western Cape and University of Fort Hare, he has also undertaken several study visits abroad. His academic visits to the University of Massachusetts, the University of London and the University of Texas have enriched his research in the field of African linguistics. In addition, Botha has translated documents from English into Xhosa for UNESCO, Mercedes Benz of South Africa and the South African Rugby Football Union. Botha gave a great number of guest lectures during his stay at the University of Bayreuth on “Early Black South African Intellectuals”, “African Thought and Philosophy”, “Xhosa Language Acquisition” and “Xhosa Literature in Translation”.
