"Vocabularies of Remembrance"

Wed, 26 April 2017, 7 pm
Iwalewahaus, Foyer

Nicola Brandt will discuss how the legacy of the Herero-Nama-German colonial war (1904–1908) is recalled today through the experience of landscapes. Her video installation Indifference explores moments of the lives of two women through fragments of their lived experiences. The stories are accompanied by large-scale triptychs of the Namibian desert coastline and its hinterland. These deceitfully beautiful, derelict landscapes contain places of historical violence. Brandt, as a Namibian of German-English origins, critically reflects on the difficult issues of representation and power as they pertain to her own artistic practice. How can innovative documentary practices offer a subtle critique of these interconnected histories and their perception today?

Nicola Brandt (Windhoek, Namibia) is a multimedia artist that weaves together divergent genres including landscape, documentary realism, scripted and found stories that explore legacies of colonialism.
