African Studies

The Institute of African Studies (IAS) of the University of Bayreuth belongs to a European network of ten African studies centres (AEGIS: Africa-Europe Group for Interdisciplinary Studies):

The aims of AEGIS, which was founded in 1991, include the promotion of common research projects in and on Africa and improvement of communication and academic exchange within Europe in both teaching and research between all the member African studies centres.

The IAS currently has particularly close contacts with the Centre d’Études d’Afrique Noire in Bordeaux, because a research project is being carried out there with a topic similar to that of the SFB/FK 560 (Dynamiques africaines et mondialisation).

In summer 2005 in London and in summer 2007 in Leiden AEGIS organized the first European Conferences on African Studies, which will be repeated in future every two to three years.
