The IAS maintains a number of formal academic cooperation agreements:
- with African universities
- with the research centre "Point Sud: Local Knowledge in Development Projects"
- within the European ERASMUS exchange scheme
- with the AEGIS research network of European African studies centres
In addition to AEGIS, there are well-established contacts with many other European and American universities.
Many institutes and Chairs at the University of Bayreuth maintain research contacts and have staff exchange arrangements with African universities, such as Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Agostinho Neto in Luanda (Angola), University of Cape Town (UCT, South Africa), Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of Congo), Makerere University (Uganda), Maseno University (Kenya), Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo (Mozambique), Rabat (Morocco).
Invitations by the Institute of African Studies to visiting academics from Africa help to promote academic exchange, support for young researchers, and creation of an international network between Bayreuth and Africa, as well as strengthening the academic institutions in Africa. German and foreign research funding bodies – such as the DAAD, the KAAD and the Humbold Foundation - regularly send African academics to Bayreuth for training or research purposes.
