African research at the University of Bayreuth has many faces. As well as interdisciplinary and/or supraregional co-operation projects, there are a lot of single projects of the departments and work-groups co-ordinated by the IAS, from which a multitude of publications emerge. The projects (both practical and theoretical) are funded by a variety of sponsors, either entirely within Bayreuth University or in co-operation with external partners.

The research profile of the IAS is organised into three areas, each denoting key topics of African and global modernism.

  1. Systems and uncertainties
  2. Mobility, communication and boundaries
  3. Change as a process, in practice and in politics

Additionally, the University library contains a vast collection of books, journals and other media relating to Africa. Even the ecological botanical gardens have an African focus.
