Religious Studies

There are two professors of Religious Studies at the university of Bayreuth. One of them together with his teaching and research assistants is involved in African Studies (Chair of Religious Studies I).

Religious Studies in Bayreuth sees itself as a non-theological discipline, applying a multidisciplinary approach to the study of religion, comprising historical, sociological and anthropological perspectives.

Major research areas are:

• New Religious Movements (African Initiated Churches) in West and South Africa;
• Muslim and Christian Perceptions of the Sharia-debate in selected African countries;
• Ritual Studies;
• Media Studies.

The department offers a M.A.-Programme in African Religions.
