There is a Juniorprofessorship in Religious Studies with a special focus on religion in Africa at the University of Bayreuth. In addition to that the interdisciplinary research project "The Economy of Sacred Space in Durban, South Africa", funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) is part of the research activities of Religious Studies at the University of Bayreuth.
Religious Studies in Bayreuth sees itself as a non-theological discipline, applying a multidisciplinary approach to the study of religion, comprising historical, sociological and anthropological perspectives.
Major research areas are:
- Christianity in Africa;
- religious diversity;
- religion and development;
- religious anthropologies;
- sacred space.
The department offers a M.A.-Programme in African Religions.
