Fostering academic exchange, research and institutional linkages
Every year, the IAS hosts multiple guests who visit the institute to engage in research, foster academic exchange, and learn from one another. On this page, you can find an overview of our esteemed guests and their research projects conducted during their visit, each contributing to the vibrant academic community at our institute. Our guests have diverse backgrounds and visit the IAS to collaborate on various research projects, share their expertise, and gain new insights through interaction with our resident scholars and students.

Members of the Institute of African Studies (IAS) can apply as hosts for travel funds to support a guest stay of a colleague at the Institute of African Studies at Bayreuth University.

Travel costs to be refunded may include:
- Flight/train to/from Bayreuth
- A lump sum of €60 (within EU) / €100 (outside EU) for travel to/from home to airport/train station
- Daily flat rate of €80/day for accommodation and meals
Visa application fees and travel insurance are not covered.
Guest stays (max. 2 months) aim at carrying out collaboration projects within the framework of African Studies at UBT (research proposals, networking, publications). Results aim at sustainable networking activities of the IAS with its partner institutions in Africa.
Please send your cover letter with:
- a) A short description of the project proposal (1 page)
- b) A brief finance plan
Send in digital form to IAS@uni-bayreuth.de, along with a CV of the guest in question.
The application will be discussed at the next Steering Committee meeting. IAS SC meetings take place three times each semester. For concrete dates and deadlines, see here.
After the Steering Committee meeting has taken a decision, you will receive a notification letter (approval or decline of your application). In this letter further details and information will be given on how to plan the guest stay and how your guest will get refunded after the stay at UBT has been completed.
All IAS guests are expected to carry out their residency at the FZA. The Centre of African Studies (FZA) provides dedicated workspace as well as access to meeting, seminar, and conference rooms. It offers an excellent research environment that enables IAS-funded guests to be fully integrated into the institute's academic activities throughout their stay. The innovative office concept of the building tries to avoid the allocation of individual single-space offices. You can read more about FZA here.
The visiting researcher is obliged to submit a short report one week before his/her departure. The report should primarily explain the reasons for choosing UBT, the activities during the stay, and the added value for future academic work (research).
Members who submit more than two applications and have had these approved should be aware that preference might be given to other members in such a situation.
We recommend the BRK Hostel or the University Guesthouse as potential places of accommodation. For other potential locations, please get in touch with your host or the IAS secretariat at Daniela.Loewinger@uni-bayreuth.de.
