¹Scholars holding a doctoral degree who work at the University of Bayreuth are eligible for membership of the Institute of African Studies (IAS). ²Membership may be granted upon written application. ³The steering committee of the Institute of African Studies decides on applications for membership. ⁴Members from all faculties, research centres, and research units may be affiliated with the Institute. ⁵The members are listed in an external membership directory, which is not part of these Regulations. ⁶Members of research centres and research units that are not directly assigned to a faculty shall decide in which faculty they wish to exercise their voting rights pursuant to § 4 para. 2. ⁷Applications for associate membership of the IAS may be submitted by emeritus and retired professors; scholars holding a doctoral degree who work on a secondary or part-time basis pursuant to Art. 19 para. 1 sentence 3 BayHIG and are authorised to conduct examinations; persons engaged on a secondary or part-time basis in academic or artistic activities who are authorised to conduct examinations and whose regular working hours amount to fewer than 10 hours per week; and former members of the University of Bayreuth who left the University for reasons of age or health. ⁸Associate members are neither entitled to vote nor eligible for election.

¹Membership shall remain valid for the duration of the affiliation with the Institute of African Studies and shall end when the member leaves the University. ²Membership may be terminated at the member's request or revoked by the steering committee of the Institute of African Studies for good cause. ²Good cause shall include, in particular, violations of the Anti-Discrimination Guidelines at the University of Bayreuth and of the University of Bayreuth's Statutes for safeguarding the standards of good scientific practice and handling academic misconduct. ³All members shall also ensure that they comply with their obligations under Art. 26 para. 1 BayHIG.

¹Members who have budget funds at their disposal shall pay the IAS an annual contribution of 5% of the recurrent research and teaching funds (DR 40) made available to them by the University of Bayreuth in the relevant budget year. ²If an IAS member is also a member of another academic institution of the University of Bayreuth that requires a financial contribution, the contribution shall be reduced to 2.5% upon application. ³In the event of multiple memberships, the members of the steering committee shall decide whether the membership contribution is to be adjusted. ⁴The members shall receive regular reports on the use of the funds.

¹In accordance with the University of Bayreuth's publication guidelines, IAS members are requested to include the name of the Institute of African Studies in their author affiliations in publications, enter those publications in eRef, and display the IAS logo at public-facing events. ²If IAS services have been used, this should be mentioned in the acknowledgements.

¹The Institute of African Studies is governed by a steering committee. ²The steering committee is composed of representatives of the faculties of the University of Bayreuth and representatives of the management of the central units of the Institute of African Studies. ³The representatives must be members of the Institute of African Studies. ⁴The spokesperson and the deputy spokesperson shall appoint an academic coordinator, who shall also be a member of the steering committee. ⁵If members of the steering committee are subordinate to the IAS spokesperson, they shall have no voting rights in personnel matters and shall have an advisory vote only.

¹The faculty representatives shall be elected and delegated for a term of two years by the IAS members of the respective faculty or of the research centres and research units. ²The respective heads of the central units of the Institute of African Studies referred to in § 5 para. 1 sentence 2 shall serve as the representatives of those units. ³Faculties with more than eight IAS members shall each delegate up to two representatives. ⁴Faculties with up to eight IAS members shall each delegate one representative; if a faculty has only one IAS member, that member shall serve as its representative. ⁵The steering committee shall additionally include up to two representatives from the group of research associates and doctoral candidates, who shall be nominated and elected across faculties by the IAS members belonging to that group.

¹From among the professors and permanent research associates serving on it, the steering committee shall elect a spokesperson and a deputy spokesperson, each for a term of two years. ²Immediate re-election is permitted only once. ³The spokesperson acts on behalf of the Institute of African Studies. ⁴The spokesperson, or the deputy spokesperson, shall convene and chair meetings of the steering committee as required, but at least twice per semester. ⁵The steering committee shall delegate the management of day-to-day business and the implementation of its resolutions to the spokesperson, the deputy spokesperson, and the academic coordinator. ⁶The steering committee may also assign specific tasks to the spokesperson. ⁷The steering committee may likewise assign specific tasks to other members of the steering committee or to the academic coordinator.

The appointment as a member of the steering committee, as spokesperson, or as deputy spokesperson shall be made by the University Governing Board of the University of Bayreuth and may be revoked for good cause.

¹The steering committee is responsible for all matters of the Institute of African Studies that are not reserved for decision by other bodies and committees. ²Decisions of the steering committee shall be made by a simple majority; in the event of a tie, the spokesperson shall have the casting vote. ³The election of the spokesperson of the steering committee shall be chaired by the member who has served on the steering committee for the longest period. ⁴The spokesperson of the steering committee is responsible in particular for the deployment of staff working at the Institute of African Studies and for its technical facilities; the spokesperson may delegate in writing the authority to issue instructions to other persons working full-time at the Institute of African Studies.

Election as a member of the steering committee, as spokesperson, or as deputy spokesperson shall not give rise to any entitlement to special remuneration.
