Recycling is taken very seriously in Germany. It is considered an integral part of daily life and considered crucial aspect of environmental protection. Here is a summary of the key rules.

Yellow Bin Plastic, metal, aluminum, and composite materials (e.g., yogurt pots, chip bags, empty spray cans). Items should be spoon clean.
Blue Bin Paper, cardboard, and newspaper.
Organic Waste Food scraps, coffee filters, fruit peels and leftovers.
Glass Bottles Separated by colour: White, Green, and Brown. Lids should be removed.
General Waste Everything else that cannot be recycled.

Sunday Rule: Do not throw glass bottles into public containers on Sundays or public holidays due to noise regulations. Remove plastic caps from glass bottles and place them in the yellow bin.

Deposit (Pfand) System: You pay a deposit on most bottles and some cans. Return these to machines in supermarkets to get your money back.
