The shopfronts in Bathurst Street, Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown), Eastern Cape, merge a colonial past with the
present. Remnants of historical wooden door frames, stained glass, and the Observatory (which houses a panopticon-like
camera obscura) mix with cell-phone kiosks and current signage.

Christine Dixie is a Senior Lecturer in the Fine Art Department at Rhodes University. Her work is included in inter/national collections incl. The New York Public Library, The Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, The Johannesburg Art
Gallery, The Iziko National Gallery and the University of Johannesburg Gallery.
