Thursday, 11 Sep 2025 | 03:00 - 04:30 pm | Hybrid
Abstract: This short documentary results from research conducted within a subproject of Beyond the Digital Return: New Heritage/s, Sustainability, and the Decolonisation of Music Archives in South Africa, Kenya, and Ghana of the African Studies Cluster of Excellence Africa Multiple-Reconfiguring African Studies, in 2023 and 2024.
The documentary, that may also be called a “research film”, portrays the collaborative action research and outreach project of Egazini, a community outreach centre in the township Joza in Makhanda/Grahamstown, South Africa, with the International Library of African Music (ILAM), in which Young DJs and poets from Makhanda were invited to reinterpret Hugh Tracey’s “Sound of Africa” Xhosa recordings.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with film makers Dr. Habil. Markus Coester (University of Bayreuth, Germany) Dr. Lee Watkins (ILAM) and Dr Elijah Madiba (ILAM), in the context of current debates on music archives, safeguarding, repatriation, “music as living heritage”.
