Fulera Issaka-Toure is a senior lecturer position at the University of Ghana, Legon, specifically in the Department for the Study of Religions with emphasis on the study of Islam. She has carried out research in the areas of gender, law and legal pluralism in the context of Ghana-a specific research that has brought her to Bayreuth. She has also worked in the areas of the feminisation of Islam, Islam in the media, Muslim philanthropy. In addition She has carried out field research in Germany among Muslim west Africans, and also, field research on Muslim youth and popular culture among the Tijaniyya in Ghana.
The purpose of her current stay in Bayreuth was to finish a book manuscript tentatively titled: Islam, Gender and Law: The State of the Sharia Muslim family law in Postcolonial Ghana. It a work that has taken so long to get done. However, acoording to her, with generosity of the IAS, she has been able to finalise the draft.
Ms. Issaka found her visit was very refreshing. She had the opportunity to connect with old friends and senior colleagues and mentors. She also got the chance to network with new people in broader area of African studies. She also attended seminars, workshop, and PhD viva.
